OpenAI is gearing up to launch a new artificial intelligence-powered web browser designed to rival Google Chrome. According to sources familiar with the project, the browser is expected to roll out in the coming weeks and will feature a built-in chat interface and the ability to integrate AI agents.

The move intensifies the competition between OpenAI and Google, especially in the realm of data and advertising. Chrome, which commands over two-thirds of the global browser market, plays a critical role in feeding Google’s advertising business with user data. By introducing its own browser, OpenAI seeks to tap into this valuable stream of behavioral data directly, potentially disrupting Google’s stronghold.

Rather than simply directing users to websites, OpenAI’s browser is designed to keep interactions within a native ChatGPT-like interface, enhancing task automation through integrated AI agents. These agents could perform actions such as making reservations or completing forms on behalf of users. This aligns with OpenAI's broader ambition to embed its services deeply into both the personal and professional lives of its users.

The new browser is reportedly based on Chromium, the open-source foundation behind Chrome, Edge, and Opera. This decision allows OpenAI to build a robust browser while maintaining full control over the data ecosystem—something that wouldn’t be possible with a third-party plugin.

This is not OpenAI’s first move beyond software. In May, it acquired io, an AI hardware startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion. These expansions into browsers and hardware indicate OpenAI’s strategic pivot toward owning the full AI experience.

The browser market, however, is fiercely competitive. Google Chrome has more than 3 billion users, while Apple’s Safari trails with a 16% market share. Other AI-focused startups such as Perplexity (with its new browser Comet), The Browser Company, and Brave are also vying to innovate browsing with AI capabilities.

With over 500 million weekly users of ChatGPT and 3 million paying business clients, OpenAI could leverage its existing base to quickly gain traction—especially if the new browser offers a superior AI-enhanced experience.
