Toyota Motor Corporation has officially opened the first phase of its ambitious Woven City project in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, five years after announcing the concept of this experimental smart city.
Developed in collaboration with 18 other companies, Woven City serves as a living laboratory to test automated logistics, self-driving technologies, and smart living solutions. The first phase spans approximately 47,000 square meters and includes 14 buildings, eight of which are residential. Around 300 residents, primarily Toyota employees, will live in the area to help test and refine the technologies.
A core feature of the project is autonomous driving. Toyota will conduct pilot programs for new car-sharing systems, where robots guide vehicles to locations selected by users via smartphone, as well as trials of unmanned delivery robots.
The participating companies include Daikin Industries Ltd., Nissin Food Products Co., and several others from outside the automotive sector. Together, they aim to co-create innovative products and services in this real-world testbed for future mobility and urban living.
